Subject: Hello
Hi my name is Claudette and I'm a sophomore at H.H. Arnold High School. I found your class of 64' on our school webpage and thought it would be nice if you guys could and wanted to have a reunion at our high school. The students here could meet people that graduated from our warrior territory and see how special that is. I know it could be expensive since you all live in the states now. But it would be nice to see your old classmates at your old school. It would bring back many memories of the good old days.

Hello Jim,
I was in the class of '64 but left at the end of my junior year. I am a retired Army Aviation officer and Vietnam veteran.

I'm actually writing to report the death of Richard S. (Rick) Kepner who was also in our class and believe he did graduate in Wiesbaden. I recently contacted his sister, Jane Kepner, who was in the class of '66 but left at the start of her junior year. Jane wrote "I don't know if you knew that my brother was also in the military, and as a F-14 pilot, crashed and died at Nellis AFB in 1976." He and his father are both buried at Arlington National Cemetery, head to head. I checked the ANC website and the exact date of his death is shown as 12/6/76. This is all the information I have.

Best Regards,
Eric Johnagin

Hi Mike,
I attended a WHS reunion in Las Vegas last week and we had about 25 or so from my Class (1964) there. We had a moment of remembrance for our departed classmates and I had several questions about John's passing.
Can you give me some history on John's passing? thanks...

Hi Jim,
John died of his first and last heart attack at 42. He was out fishing with friends one evening. Drinking beer and enjoying himself. He came home to the house he built near Torch Lake, MI and had a heart attack in the bathroom. He died on the way to the hospital on a flight for life transport.

John had two daughters with his wife Cathy. They were very young when he died. Jessica, the oldest, is a doctor, and is married with one child. She practices in Pontiac, MI. Clara, Jessica's younger sister, lives in Central Lake, MI and is getting married on 8/1/09.

John was in the prim of his life when he died. He had his own business building houses and doing various carpentry jobs for the local Torch Lake community. He was truly talented in that profession. He played softball on the church team and was well liked by and respected by everyone who know him.

He and I had a wonderful relationship and I still miss him dearly.

You may already know, but our father, retired in 1972, had his first and last heart attack in 1977 at 56. My father and John had similar personalities and work ethics. Me I'm pretty easy going and hope to collect my federal law enforcement retirement for 30 years!

Thanks for asking,
Mike Kimball

It looks like the reunion was a blast. I'll have to make the next one. Too bad you couldn't have got Max into that Blue Man Group photo, though. (I can say this, because I share his hair style.)
On a closing note, you can add me to the Army list in the Veterans' section. (1968-72; lots of fun on assignment to Germany... not so much in RVN)
Keep up the great work. I hope our paths cross.

Thank you for the super slide show, Jim. My Jim says we don't look as badly as our smart ass son indicated. He actually loved meeting his old folks' high school buds even though Max scared him because his IQ was higher than everyone's in our class combined with the 978 kids in Greg's and Erika's graduating class. He wholly approved of Phippen and told me he was proud that I had such intuitiveness at a young age - to pick the classiest broad in the room as a BFF. We'll see you at the next one (in Vegas) and again, thanks for keeping us so well connected. You are a Prince!

So many I didn't see in Charleston. Looks like a great time. (I wonder what Armstrong is feeding Butterfield to keep her looking so young. He ought to consider taking some himself.) It looks like everyone has another few years left in them. I look forward to seeing all in the future. Once again, thanks for keeping everyone in the loop.

Jim, Thought I'd take a minute to send you a few words. I have been keeping up with all the WHS goings on via the website and it sounds like the old Warrior spirit is alive and strong. Regrettably, I have to inform you that I won't be able to attend the upcoming Vegas event. It's certainly not a lack of desire, simply a scheduling thing which can't be changed. Hopefully I can make the next one. Having seen some of the old pix of the earlier reunions brings back many fond memories, particularly of the '74 get together in Wash DC.

There's so many ?'s to ask and stories to be told that it's almost impossible to begin. It would be a long evening and a lot of cocktails!! I'll take you up on the pick up game of
B-ball with John Hunt. I will make a sincere effort to stay in touch and begin the process of catching up on a lot of years.

I retired from the AF at the 20 year point to continue flying. First for 3 years with Midway Airlines (DC-9s and MD-80s) in Chicago until they closed in 1991 and then with World Airways. I spent my last 13 years in the left seat of the MD-11 till the FAA forced me to retire under the then "age 60" mandatory retirement rule. I now do a little part time flying with the Army Corps of Engineers who have a Metro 23 based at Offutt AFB here in Omaha, but other than that I spend my time on the golf course , babysitting grandkids, or just goofing off. …..

By chance I was at Gen H.H. Arnold HS this past Friday. All teachers I had are now retired or have died. This will probably the same for you. Army Europe is in transition and the HQ for US Army in Europe - reshaped from USAREUR to 7th Army will be headquartered at Wiesbaden Air Base. So a new high school will be built at WAB, and the high school (Gen H. H. Arnold) will become a middle school. Don't know if they intend to name the new school the same - but might be something to ask and work on now. The current middle school across the street was renamed the endearing Hainerberg Middle School from being the former Vandenberg Middle School, so the Army is working hard to eliminate all vestiges of the original Air Force use of Wiesbaden. They haven't kept the facilities up that well either.

In the next year they are going to tear down the two gyms, the high school and the CYS (where they had some of the school dances) and the building where the band practices will be removed for a new gym that is next to the football field. The band practice room in now a computer lab.

At Aukam housing they are in the process of renovating all the buildings, mine hasn't been started and is still occupied. They are gutting the interiors and on the outside putting a glass sloped canopy at the front door. Note the buildings are 53 years old.

The city still looks the same, the Hospital is now the Hessen State Police HQ. Lindsey Air Station is now the Federal Criminal HQ. I stayed at the "American Arms" some interior renovation, but still looks the same (except the fence) and security. There is a high fence around every thing and they search your car when you go to Hainerberg Shopping center. The Army really hasn't kept up the facilities and they look pretty bad. I had a base planning class, the class was at the European Engineer HQ which is now in the Amelia Earhart building.

I am attaching a few photos of the HS interior - they get real antsy about anyone taking photos of the prison like atmosphere of the exterior (Force Protection of the US dependents issues). Did find the portrait of Gen. Arnold and the dedication plaque in the building, but in a different location. They have retiled the entire interior covering the beige brick and replacing the wooden lockers with smaller steel ones. Note they have a high fence and gate guards at the parking lot next to the gym to limit who comes in and out. It is true of all of the US facilities - high fences and barbed wire around all of the housing areas, hard to escape. Most of the housing areas are going through interior renovation process in preparation for the closure of Heidelberg and Mannheim and all those troops moving to Wiesbaden. Troop population in Europe is to be fixed at 28,000 from the high of 450,000 in the mid eighties.

I have more photos, so maybe they can be posted on the website ………………….

I am living in Stuttgart working for EUCOM.

Hey Jim,
Thanks for following up on that and for the email.

I believe we should make an effort to get the name change annulled; not just for sentimental reasons, but it seems to me an incredible slight to General Arnold. I don’t think “higher ups” confusion is a real good reason.

Does any one know how the naming came about in the first place (other than the obvious scope of his biography)?

If anyone agrees and has any ideas, I will help in the pursuit. Cheers, John

Jim,
Just a note on the e-mail that you forwarded which asked the question "why was the high school named H.H> Arnold?"

I, and a few others, were in Wiesbaden at that time--I was 10-year-old and my father was on his first tour which started in 1953.
at the time Hainerburg Elementary school was just built, and one wing of it had the Jr. high on one floor--don't exactly remember which floor but I think it was bottom--and the high school was on second floor, if the junior high was on bottom\. Or it may be vice-versa.
At the time there were only two housing areas--Hainerburg and Crestview, and Crestview was divided between enlisted and officers. Aukam wasn't built but before we left in 1957 it was partially completed--not fully as it was in 60 when we returned.
...anyway, as I remember it, General Curtis Lemay was the commanding officer of USAAF in Europe and also commanding officer of Wiesbaden Air Base. In those days, my father used to speak to General Lemay quite often--at officers' club, which at that time was up on the hill above the Golden Dome church in that old German hunt club with pool outside.....as well as Lemay often coming into the commissary, which was across from the Bahnhof, across the street from the start of the Park--you can see the old commissary in the Elvis film GI Blues when there is a scene shot on the park green--the new commissary, which my father actually had built, didn't open up until 1962 on what was the old Little League complex below the High School athletic field.
...........anyway, back to why HS was named HH Arnold--as I remember, my father told us that Lemay was a protege of H.H. Arnold and that was why he named the HS after Arnold.

Eric, Just a question.....Who are those "higher ups," that you referred to in a email to Jim Maloney about the name change to Wiesbaden High School?
Maybe we need to have a nice chat with, "higher ups."           Bureaucrats be damned!
Howard Hall ... Gen H H Arnold Class of 64
And got the following response
Don't know who, but it was above my level. It was just to simplify the confusion ...  for years many people thought they were dealing with two different schools.  I had to spend time to clarify this misconception on a regular basis.
It's just for ordering and logistical purposes...in essence H H Arnold rules!
      .....Eric
(WHS Principal...ed.)

I truthfully think this is very typical of upper managers (read anal bureaucrats) trying to manage. These individual have no idea of the history or background of our school. They are just middle level managers with good intent but very short sighted.

In doing a little research, H H Arnold High is in the Heidelberg school group for the DOD Dependent Schools Europe. Then there is a nice chain back to the DOD Dependent Schools. I think the change was made either at the Europe level of back in Washington.

What's the best course of action? I like going right to the top. A email campaign directly to our new President and every member of Congress asking that they direct to DOD Dependent School to recognize Gen H H Arnold and correct this middle level management error.

If we get it all together and pick a week, when congress is in session, and every one of us who attended Gen H H Arnold send an email to our Senators and Congressmen asking for there assistance. Asking them to contact the DOD or even better attach a very short amendment to a bill directing the name back to Gen H. H. "Hap" Arnold.

I don't know about the timing but one possible cause for this issue could be presidential politics. I am neither endorsing or criticizing anyone here but it is a fact that President Obama has repeatedly stated that he wants to bring the US back into the world community. One way to indirectly do that would be to eliminate US military references to landmarks in other countries. I could be totally off base here (no pun intended) but it is certainly something to consider especially if there is a pattern of this in several locals.

I don't know about the motive. Seems the name was changed long before Obama came into the picture; but for whatever reason I agree we should attempt to restore the General's name to our Alma Mater. Is there a lawyer in the house? Oh, that's right, there is. Let's go after 'em. I haven't had a good fight since RR fired me from my cushy government job.

Again, I believe the name was changed - from talking to the principal's etc - because
it was thought that the schools might be less of a target for anti-American activities.
Wiesbaden High School vs. Gen. H.H. Arnold H.S..  One of our Alumni said that was a little silly considering the schools all sport the American flag.... I think anti-American political junkies might not even look up the name of the school before they started and "activities."  Just a thought.......... I remember the bombs on Lindsay Air Station etc during the mid-70s.  Whoever threw them (placed them) didn't care much if there was an elementary school on that base.

My class WHS'64 will probably have about 15-20 attendees and I was wondering if there was a "spirit" store capable of taking orders from alumni. Things like t-shirts, ball caps, etc. When I was an active airline pilot I used to stop through and visit the school occasionally and buy a t-shirt or something.
If so, can you put me in contact with the person in charge?
If not... may be a good way to raise money for the student government or the school.

Judy, I would be happy to look into transportation to and from the Hotel to our house for the party. I know this is a sticking point right now (how many folks want to participate) but it really is important that we get some idea as to numbers. If there are more than 5 or 6 that want to use it, we will have to get one of those Limo Vans that seat about 20 people. If only 5 or 6 want to participate, we might be better off just taking a couple of cabs or a regular limo.

We don't have to reserve any of this stuff until April sometime. Mike, if you could send an email to everyone and tell them (don't ask) that if they want to partake of limo service, they have to commit to you by the end of February, that might help. We can then go with what we have.

Just to give you an idea about cost, a cab would probably run about $35 each way. A regular limo (for about 6-8 people) will run about $200 for the night plus tip. Those Van Limos charge by the person. The last time we used one a couple of years ago, it was about $25 each, round trip, plus tip.  Let me know what you want to do. I think the forceful email is a must for starters.     Jim
